Campbell County Forest
Quality Assessment
The Northern Kentucky Urban & Community Forestry Council is
currently conducting a forest quality assessment of Campbell
County. The planning agencies of Northern Kentucky, OKI (Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana Regional Council of Governments), and the Conservation Districts of Northern Kentucky have expressed the need for natural resource inventories to aid them in planning for land use. Forest quality assessments are a part of this inventorying. Forest quality assessments are also important planning tools for tree and urban forestry boards, and land conservancies.
Forest quality assessments, commissioned by Northern Kentucky Urban & Community Forestry Council (NKUCFC), have been completed in Boone and Kenton Counties. The missing piece in Northern Kentucky is the assessment for Campbell County.
With a completed Campbell County Forest Quality Assessment there will be a green data layer for all of Northern Kentucky which will aid the coordination of planning for land use, natural systems and public facilities. The green data layer can be used to do ‘Ecosystem Analysis’ to quantify ecological and economic benefits of trees and related green infrastructure, to communicate forest values, to support public policy decisions, and to promote green infrastructure in communities.
The Campbell County Forest Quality Assessment is scheduled
for completion in the summer 2008. Check back for study
results.
CITYGreen Project in Campbell County
The soft ware CITYGreen has been used to do an analysis of the forest cover along KY 27, between KY 536 and AA Hwy. which is scheduled for reconstruction. CITYGreen, with the necessary data, can quantify the savings of using tree canopy to address air pollutant removal and stormwater runoff instead of building gray infrastructure to manage it. Results of this study will be forth coming.
